Background of the Study:
Moral education is increasingly recognized as a powerful tool for cultivating responsibility, empathy, and a commitment to societal ideals among students. In Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, there is a growing emphasis on social justice, which involves fairness, equity, and protection of human rights. Integrating moral education into the curriculum is seen as a means to instill these values, motivating students to challenge social inequities and advocate for marginalized groups (Brown, 2023).

Recent educational reforms have aligned moral instruction with the goals of social justice by integrating discussions on discrimination, poverty, and civic responsibility into classroom activities. Educators in Lafia LGA have introduced innovative programs that combine traditional ethical teachings with contemporary social issues, aiming to foster critical thinking and empower students to be agents of change. However, despite these initiatives, uncertainty remains about whether moral education translates into a sustained commitment to social justice among students (Smith, 2024).

The challenge lies in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. While moral education offers a framework for discussing abstract principles, its real-world impact depends on students applying these ideals in community interactions. Factors such as teaching methodology, resource availability, and socio-cultural contexts influence program effectiveness. This study aims to assess how moral education contributes to fostering a commitment to social justice by evaluating curriculum content, pedagogical strategies, and teacher influence (Adams, 2025).

Furthermore, the study examines external influences such as family background, media exposure, and local socio-political dynamics that shape students’ attitudes toward social justice. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study seeks to provide a holistic evaluation of how moral education impacts students’ willingness to engage with social justice issues. The findings will inform policy and curriculum development, ultimately contributing to the creation of a more equitable society.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite efforts to integrate social justice ideals into moral education in Lafia LGA, a significant gap persists between the theoretical teachings and the observable commitment of students to these principles. Although the curriculum is designed to raise awareness of inequality and discrimination, many students remain disengaged from actively addressing social challenges. This disconnect raises concerns about the effectiveness of current moral education programs in instilling a lasting commitment to social justice. Inadequate practical application, insufficient teacher training, and competing external influences may undermine the intended outcomes (Smith, 2024).

Moreover, the absence of empirical data on how moral education affects student engagement with social justice issues further complicates the problem. Without clear evidence, educators find it challenging to pinpoint which aspects of the curriculum yield positive outcomes and which require enhancement. The observed indifference or passive engagement may also stem from external pressures such as economic hardship and political instability (Adams, 2025). This study seeks to bridge these gaps by evaluating the relationship between moral education and students’ commitment to social justice. It will analyze curriculum content, teaching practices, and the institutional environment to determine the factors that either promote or inhibit active engagement. By doing so, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for improving the educational framework to better cultivate a robust commitment to social justice among students (Brown, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of moral education in fostering a commitment to social justice among students in Lafia LGA.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of curriculum and teaching methodologies in promoting social justice values.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for strengthening the integration of social justice principles in moral education.

Research Questions:

  1. How does moral education influence students’ commitment to social justice?

  2. What aspects of the curriculum effectively promote social justice values among students?

  3. What are the key challenges in integrating social justice principles into moral education?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Moral education has a significant positive impact on students' commitment to social justice.

  2. Effective teaching methodologies enhance the internalization of social justice values among students.

  3. External socio-economic factors negatively affect the translation of moral education into practical social justice actions.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of moral education in fostering social justice among students in Lafia LGA. The findings will provide insights into how curriculum reforms and teaching strategies can be optimized to promote active engagement with social justice issues. Educators, policymakers, and community stakeholders will benefit from evidence-based recommendations that enhance the ethical development of students, contributing to a more equitable society. The study underscores the importance of aligning moral education with contemporary social challenges (Adams, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the impact of moral education on fostering commitment to social justice among students in Lafia LGA. It focuses on local schools and curricular components related to social justice without extending to other regions or educational contexts. Limitations include potential self-report biases and variations in program implementation.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Moral Education: The teaching and learning process aimed at developing ethical values and responsible behavior.

  2. Social Justice: The concept of fairness and equity in the distribution of resources, opportunities, and rights.

  3. Commitment: The degree to which students engage in and advocate for social justice principles.
